What to Do During a Dental Emergency

November 30, 2023 4:38 am

Dental emergencies can be stressful and painful! Whether it’s a sudden toothache, a knocked-out permanent tooth, or a broken crown, being prepared and knowing how to respond is crucial for preserving your oral health. Below, we talk about common dental emergencies to help you handle the situation with confidence.

Toothaches

A sudden toothache can be debilitating. Try cleaning the affected area. Rinse your mouth with warm water, brush your teeth, and gently floss to remove any debris that may be causing discomfort. Contact us if the pain persists! Over-the-counter pain relievers and a cold compress can help alleviate pain until you can see us.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If a permanent tooth gets knocked out, time is of the essence. Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently without scrubbing, and try to reinsert it into the socket. If this isn’t possible, place the tooth in milk, your saliva, or a tooth preservation product. Get to an emergency dentist immediately, as the chances of saving the tooth decrease with time.

Broken or Cracked Tooth

For a broken or cracked tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to your cheek to reduce swelling. Save any broken pieces and bring them to the dentist. It’s crucial to see a dentist promptly for evaluation and appropriate dental treatment.

Lost Crown or Filling

If a crown or filling becomes dislodged, save it and schedule an urgent appointment with your dentist!

Soft Tissue Injuries

Injuries to the lips, cheeks, tongue, or gums may result in bleeding. Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze or a clean cloth to control the bleeding. If bleeding persists, seek immediate medical attention.
